IntroductionPart of our 2008 Wildlife Management Plan included the creation of brushpiles in open fields on the farm. These brushpiles serve as a nesting and shelter environment for birds and small mammals. These brushpiles were created by cutting small trees and shrubs that make up the understory in the forest, hauling them out to the fields to be stacked in open areas. Most of the brush is made up of yaupon. In addition, there are some small cedar trees, vines, and other brush material. Each brushpile was given a number. I'll add photographs every once in a while to show how the brushpiles grow and settle. Here's the list: Brushpile #1This first brushpile was created on December 9, 2007. We stacked the pile around a tree snag, thinking that it provided a perch area as well.
Brushpile #2The second brushpile was created on April 12, 2008. Again, we chose a snag in the Hi-Fi Pasture as a point to stack the brush.
Brushpile #3Brushpile #3 was started on August 17, 2008.
Brushpile #4Brushpile #4 was created on October 25, 2008. This was the first time I created one that wasn't around a snag.
Brushpile #5Brushpile #5 was created on November 14, 2009. It was time to start a new brushpile, as I had been clearing a turn-around-loop near the south fenceline road and lots of brush. Along the dirt road on the west side of the Hi-Fi Pasture was the remainder of a large tree limb that had fallen. Keeping with the spirit of Arlo Guthrie's song Alice's Restaurant, I decided to add to it rather than move it.
Brushpile #6Brushpile #6 was created on July 9, 2011.
Brushpile #7Brushpile #7 was created on February 11, 2012.
Brushpile #8Brushpile #8 was created on November 24, 2012.
