The genus Melanerpes is a group of woodpeckers. Six species can be found in North America.
The species of Melanerpes for which I have photographs from the Sula-Richards Farm are listed below.
 | Melanerpes carolinus
Common name is Red-bellied Woodpecker. Red head from nape to crown; ladder-backed; pale breast. This is the most frequently seen woodpecker on the farm. |
