I went out to the garage to close the garage door for the evening. When I turned on the garage light momentarily, I heard a fluttering of wings towards the back of the garage and I saw this small owl perched on some lawn stripping that was hanging on the garage wall.
I ran back in the house to grab my camera while Joni stood at the front of the garage to discourage the owl's departure. Once I snapped off a few photographs, we turned all the lights back off and went back in the house. A couple of hours later, I checked and the little Screech Owl was gone.
The next day I emailed the photograph to my sister Emily who helped with identifying it as a Gray-phase Eastern Screech Owl.
Interestingly, the pegboard that provides the photograph's background allows an accurate determination of the owl's size. The holes in the pegboard are spaced one inch apart. That makes the owl about six inches tall.
